People out in force for National Parks Week events

This year’s Bogtastic event, which celebrated Exmoor’s wonderful bogs, had over 40 different activities from bats to barn owls, diggers to bog dipping with people travelling from far and wide to enjoy the day.

BBC Spotlight came along to film the fun and the event raised funds for CareMoor for Exmoor, the National Park conservation and access fund.

Morag Angus, Exmoor Mires Project Manager said: “Bogtastic, fantastic! Amazing to see so many smiles on kids and adults faces as they got stuck into all the bog and river activities. A collaborative event held during National Parks Week that truly showed some of the best that Exmoor has to offer.

“A big thank you to everybody, which includes all the volunteers and activity providers who made it such a smooth running enjoyable day.”

Comments from those who came include, from the UK: “
“Just to say well done for a fantastic day last Wednesday with lots of visitors enjoying exploring the wonders of the moor despite the odd shower. Well done too, to your helpers, our grandchildren and a group from school came and had a great time – mud and all. Altogether a great and mind expanding event, well done.”

And from France: “A big thank you, it’s not just Anne serving tea and coffee who was happy, but children in the bog water, with beautifully painted faces, or feet in the river or Sophie, enjoy the luck of living here. Merci pour tout bon week-end.”

David Rolls, moorland education officer said: “On behalf of all the Bogtastic team, thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone that helped, we couldn’t have done it without you.”

Also during National Park Week, nearly 50 people also enjoy the Dunkery by Moonlight walk, guided up by a National Park ranger to the highest point on Exmoor. Fortunately it was a clear night and the full moon really did look like a Somerset brie.
