Grants to support the famous free-living Exmoor Ponies of Exmoor National Park were launched this week by the Lottery-funded scheme ‘Heart of Exmoor‘.

“These grants offer support for people who manage the Exmoor Pony herds on the exposed moors,” said Linzi Green, Exmoor Pony Officer for Heart of Exmoor, based at the Moorland Mousie Trust. “Simple things can make a big difference to the hard work of taking care of the ponies, and grants can help pay for items like fences and portable hurdles.”

“This fund is exclusively available to the moorland herd owners,” added Jason Ball, the Scheme Manager. “The Exmoor Pony is an ancient yet vulnerable breed, symbolic of the moorland, just like the Red Deer.”

“We are grateful to the Heritage Lottery Fund who recognised the special importance of the ponies as part of the landscape. The funding makes a real impact, and together the Exmoor Pony Society, Moorland Mousie Trust and Exmoor National Park Authority are busy promoting the Exmoor Pony.”

Exmoor Ponies made a big impression on the nation when BBC Autumnwatch Live ran a special feature about them, showing the effort it takes to gather the herds each year. A whole team of people including Linzi was involved in the operation.
