For Immediate Release

Stunning Views and Undoubted Talents on Show at Barnstaple Museum

‘The Barle at Simonsbath’ by Heart of Exmoor winner Chris Bowman

Judging of the entrants to the Museum of North Devon and Barnstaple’s Heritage Photographic Competition has taken place and selected framed photographs are now being displayed throughout the Museum of Barnstaple and North Devon.

In this annual photographic competition celebrating the scenery, wildlife, towns and people of North Devon, the Museum of Barnstaple and North Devon received 470 entries from 93 entrants.  The judges for this year’s competition, Robin Ravilious and Andy Robinson, awarded the overall Cup Winner to Debbie Soden’s picture entitled Winter’s Walk.

In addition, the North Devon Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty sponsored the category, The Year of the Forest, with Lorraine Parramore’s snowy scene of Woolacombe judged to be the winner.

New to this year’s competition was the involvement of the Exmoor Moorland Landscape Partnership who sponsored the Heart of Exmoor category.  Chris Bowman’s picture of the River Barle won this category.

Rose Day, Chairman of the AONB, said:
“The photographs in the Heritage photographic competition are a wonderful tribute both to the stunning views of the North Devon Coast AONB and to the undoubted talents of our local photographers.  Our theme of “2011: The Year of Forest” has inspired photographs of beautiful wooded combes, Devon hedge banks, and wide coastal panoramas, and illustrates the very special qualities of our North Devon AONB coastline. Do come along to the Museum to admire and enjoy these outstandingly beautiful photographs.””

Jason Ball from the EMLP added:
“We challenged photographers to capture the moorland of Exmoor National Park, and were delighted by the range and high quality of entries in the Heart of Exmoor category. Chris Bowman clinched first prize for a stunning picture of the River Barle winding through a moorland valley at sunset. Congratulations to the museum on running a brilliant competition and exhibition, and thank you to Exmoor Magazine, who offered to publish the best moorland pictures.”

The North Devon in Photographs exhibition is open and runs until 14 January 2012, from 10am-4pm with free admission.
